Grief and Loss
|Grief and loss impacts all of us at some point in our lives, through the death of a loved one, pet, or loss of a friendship or romantic relationship. It could result from the loss of a job, home, health, or dream, or from having experienced a miscarriage, abortion, or infertility.
In coping with loss, it helps to have support. One difficulty with grief is that often we have support for a limited time, but then are left to manage on our own. This is unfortunate given the rollercoaster of emotions experienced in grieving, ranging from denial, bargaining, anger, sadness, and acceptance, which can last, for some, for many years. While the passing of time often makes things easier, we never forget, and anniversaries and memories can trigger fresh emotions.
Counselling can help by assisting us in moving through the difficult emotions of grief, finding ways to remember and honor the loss, and to find a new meaning and direction in life. It often helps to talk with a professional, especially when we do not have, or lose, social supports, or when the emotional struggle is acute.
